5 Signs That Your Fridge Thermostat Is Malfunctioning
Your fridge’s thermostat is what keeps the entire device working as it should. It regulates the temperature and keeps the compressor doing what it should. If your thermostat breaks down, you will probably need to replace it – but how do you know when this time has come? Just Refrigeration tells you five signs you need to look out for.
Signs It Is Time to Replace Your Malfunctioning Fridge Thermostat
The thermostat is like an automatic on/off button for your fridge. It ensures that the machines various components work in balance to keep the fridge’s contents at just the right temperature. If this vital part is malfunctioning, it could mean wasted stock – and thus financial loss. Look out for these five signs and see if your thermostat needs to be replaced.

1. The Fridge Is Too Warm
If the fridge doesn’t feel cold, this is the most obvious sign that your thermostat has stopped working. However, first check to see that there is enough space surrounding the fridge. If a fridge is pushed right up against a wall, this can also prevent it from cooling properly. If this is not the case, and your fridge is still too warm, you probably need to replace the thermostat.
2. The Fridge Is Unusually Cold
On the other hand, if the fridge is unusually cold, this could also spell trouble for the thermostat. Use a thermometer to check the fridge’s temperature and try increasing the temperature by a degree or two. If this does not make any change, you will probably need to call a technician to take a look at the thermostat.
3. Fluctuating Temperatures
Even slight fluctuations in a fridge’s temperature can ruin your food. The fridge should be at or below 4 degrees Celsius. If it keeps going up or down, your thermostat is not doing its job.
4. Compressor Won’t Turn On Or Off
The thermostat automatically switches the compressor on if temperatures have got too high, and then kicks in to turn it off if the fridge gets to cold. If this automatic on/off function is not happening, the thermostat is probably faulty.
5. Frost build-up
Normally, the switch in the thermostat will turn off if the fridge has reached too low a temperature. This helps to prevent frost build-up. If frost is accumulating in the freezer, it means that the unit is getting too cold for too long, which points towards a thermostat malfunction.
